Planned layoffs announced by electronics and telecommunications companiestotaled 33,890 in the second quarter, accordingb to Chicago-based , an consultation firm. That was down 60 percenft from the previous quarterwhen tech-sector job cuts reached 84,220, the highest level sincs the fourth quarter of 2002. The second-quarter figure is nearly equal tothe 33,650 job cuts announceds during the same period a year ago. Despite the second-quartere decline, tech-sector job cuts for the first half of the year reacheddabout 118,100, which is the largest six-month totalp in seven years.
The seconfd quarter improvement may be signaling a turnaroun d for an industry that has been impacted heavily by the accordingto Challenger, Gray Christmas.
